The fairy washboard, in its variegated form

Haworthia limifolia grows as a tight rosette of stiff triangular leaves crossed by raised horizontal ridges, so the whole plant looks carved rather than grown. The variegated form adds vertical stripes of yellow and pale cream running against those ridges, which is a genuinely unusual combination — most variegated succulents are smooth-leaved, so the pattern has nothing to play against.

It is rarer and slower than the plain green form, and it stays small enough to live on a desk for years without needing anything from you.

Light

Bright indirect light. Plain limifolia is famously shade-tolerant — it grows under rocks and shrubs in southern Africa — but the variegated form is a more delicate proposition in both directions. The cream sections carry no pigment, so harsh direct afternoon sun scars them permanently; too little light and the plant compensates by pushing greener growth, and the variegation weakens. An east-facing sill, or a bright desk out of the sun's direct path, is the balance.

Water

Very little, every two to three weeks, once the soil has dried out completely. Because it sits in lower light than most succulents its soil dries slowly, so overwatering is easier to do with this plant than almost anything else here. Water at the soil, never into the rosette.

Cut back further from November to February, when growth stops and dry indoor air disguises how wet the soil still is underneath. The winter care guide has the seasonal shift.

Soil and potting

Gritty, fast-draining mix in a small pot with a drainage hole. Modest roots do not want a large volume of damp soil around them — see the soil mix guide.

Growing it on

Limifolia clusters. Over a year or two it produces offsets around the base until the pot fills with small rosettes, and the offsets keep the variegation. The propagation guide covers dividing them without tearing the roots. Slow growth is the trade-off — this is not a plant that fills a pot in a season.

Good to know

Non-toxic to cats and dogs, and forgiving enough to survive being forgotten, which is a rare pairing in a collector plant.
