Yellow Tower Cactus (Golden Ball)
Parodia leninghausii — a columnar cactus covered in soft golden-yellow bristles that catch and hold the light, so the whole plant seems to glow on a sunny sill. It starts as a 6–8 inch tower and slowly builds upward for years. Full sun to very bright light, water every 3–4 weeks and let the soil go completely dry. Beginner-friendly. A cactus that glows
Parodia leninghausii grows as an upright green column densely covered in fine, soft golden-yellow bristles. The spines are the point: they are flexible rather than rigid, they catch the light along the whole length of the plant, and on a sunny windowsill the column appears to be lit from inside. At 6–8 inches it is a starter tower, and it will keep climbing slowly for many years.
It is also one of the most forgiving cacti we sell, which makes it a sensible first one — the golden bristles are the reward, and the plant asks very little to keep them.
Light
Direct sun to very bright indirect light. It needs the brightness both for health and for looks — bristle density falls off in weak light, and the newer growth at the top comes in thinner and greener, which leaves a visible step in the column that never corrects. A south or west-facing sill or a balcony is right. Acclimatise it over a week or two before putting an indoor plant into full outdoor summer sun.
Water
Every three to four weeks, and let the soil dry 100% first. This plant thrives on neglect and the only reliable way to kill it is to keep watering a pot that has not dried out. Soak thoroughly, let it drain right through, then leave it alone. Through the Islamabad winter, reduce to almost nothing — a completely dry, cool rest is what it wants and what encourages the large yellow flowers on mature plants.
Soil and potting
Sandy, highly porous cactus mix in a pot with a drainage hole. Ordinary garden soil holds far too much water and is the usual cause of base rot; our soil mix guide covers the sand and perlite ratio. The soft bristles make this an easier cactus to handle than most, though gloves are still sensible when repotting.

Good to know
